1
Erosion Explain the differences between erosion and deposition.
Explain why building on a steep slop may not be wise.
2
Erosion by Gravity
3
Erosion Erosion: The process that wears away surface materials and moves them from one place to another.
4
Erosion Identify causes (agents) of erosion: 1. gravity 2. water
3. wind 4. glaciers
5
Erosion Deposition: When sediments are dropped by agents of erosion as they lose energy. Question: When sediments are eroded, where do they go? They are not lost just relocated.
6
Erosion Mass movement: Any type of erosion that happens as gravity moves materials down slope.
7
Erosion Review Question: Why does mass movement occur? Gravity
8
Erosion Slump: When a mass of material slips down along a curved surface.
9
Erosion Creep: When sediments slowly shift their positions downhill.
10
Creep
11
Erosion Rockfalls and rock slides occur when layers of rock slip downslope suddenly.
12
Erosion Mudflows typically occur in areas that were very dry and experienced a great loss of vegetation, then a heavy rainfall washed out the exposed sediment.
13
Erosion Review Question: What are some methods to reduce erosion?
Plant vegetation. Drainage pipes or tiles. Walls of concrete or boulders.
