1 Eclipses and Tides

2 Solar eclipse The Moon, lines up exactly between the Earth and the Sun.

3 Lunar eclipse The Moon is blocked from the Sun’s rays by the Earth.

4 Parts of an eclipse Total darkness is called the umbra
The outer shadow is partially illuminated by the Sun, and is called the penumbra.

5 Why eclipses happen

6 When can they occur? Solar Eclipses – can occur only during the new moon phase Lunar eclipses – can occur only during the full moon phase

7 Why not every month? Moon revolves around Earth
Earth revolves around Sun Alignment has to be perfect, that is rare.

8 Why we have tides The gravitational pull of the moon and Sun
The moon is closer so it affects us more than the Sun.

9 Tides Tides happen every day! High tides happen every 12 hrs every day
Low tides happen every 12 hrs every day That means every 6 hours you have a high or low tide shift.
