Strategies for Reading
Good readers uses these strategies to help gain a better understanding of what they read.

Good readers PREDICT They try to figure out what will happen next.
They try to figure out how the selection might end.

They continue reading to see how accurate their predictions are.

Good readers VISUALIZE
They imagine characters, events, and settings to help them understand what’s happening. They pay attention to the images that form in their minds as they read.

Good readers CONNECT They connect personally with what they’re reading. They think of similarities between the descriptions in the selection and what they have personally experienced, heard about, or read about.

Good readers QUESTION They question what happens while they read.
They search for reasons behind events and character’s feelings to help them feel closer to what they’re reading.

Good readers CLARIFY They stop occasionally to review what they understand.

They expect to have their understanding change and develop as they read on.

They re-read to increase their understanding.

They watch for the answers to their earlier questions!

Good readers EVALUATE They form opinions about what they read while they are reading and after they’ve finished reading.

They develop their own ideas about characters and events.
