Transition: Today we are going to talk about the effects of the Revolutionary War. You will learn about these effects by (OBJECTIVES NEXT SLIDE)

4 Objectives Today you will be able to answer the questions; Why did families move West? What was the Northwest Territory? You will do this by completing a RACER using pages in your social studies textbook 

5 Effects of the War 1776 (Why is this date important?) States begun to write their own constitutions A list of Basic Freedoms The Declaration of Independence changed the way Americans thought about the rights people had. Read p.365 “In Massachusetts…” Was Elizabeth Freeman correct in what she was suing for? What was the result?

6 Western Settlement The United States did not have enough money to pay soldiers for the war, so they used the land they won from the British to pay the soldiers for the war. Amount of land awarded varied based on soldier’s rank and how long they served.

7 Battles for Land Native Americans in the Northwest Territory came together to fight off the new settlers. The Native Americans were lead by: Michikinikwa (Little Turtle) 1790s, Native American forces defeated Americans at the Battle of Fallen Timbers Treaty of Greenville: Native Americans gave most of their land in the Northwest Territory When the Treaty was signed, many Native Americans did not trust the United States Government. Americans kept spreading West to build farms and towns. Native American lives were never going to be the same!! Video???
