3 What we already know We have talked about the causes and impact of the Great depression. Now we will focus on how FDR worked to address the crisis.

4 Roosevelt & the New deal
FOCUS Roosevelt proposed the New Deal, which provided financial assistance and jobs to those unemployed, and created new agencies to promote economic recovery.

5 Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York in He was governor of New York from 1929 to Franklin Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth U.S. president, were fifth cousins. On March 17, 1905 he married Eleanor.

In 1932 democrats nominated Franklin Delano Roosevelt as their choice to run for President against the incumbent Republican President Herbert Hoover.

BACKGROUND FDR was a wealthy New Yorker & relative to Teddy Roosevelt. He served as Assistant secretary of the Navy and was a Vice Presidential nominee in 1920.

In 1921 FDR was afflicted with polio, a potentially deadly disease. He would later depend on leg braces and canes to get around and would later be relegated to a wheelchair.

VOICE OF HOPE From his pledge of a New Deal for Americans, FDR beat Hoover by a Margin of 472 electoral votes to 59.

After taking office, FDR declared a bank holiday; a 4 day closing that allowed banks a little breathing room to stop closures and create the Emergency Banking Relief Act.

11 Relief for the Jobless In the first 100 days of FDR’s administration he was able to get passed 15 bills which to this day is a record.

12 Relief for the Jobless Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) granted funds to the states so they could reopen relief agencies.

13 Relief for the Jobless Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) hired city dwellers to work in national parks, forests, wilderness areas, and the countryside. Buffalo Crossing Camp, Eastern Arizona

14 Relief for the Jobless In addition to providing to jobs the CCC conserved natural resources.

15 Relief for the Jobless Another program was the Works Progress Administration (WPA). This put people to work repairing buildings such as post offices, schools, government offices.
