1 Chemical and Physical Properties

2 Matter All matter has 2 types of properties: Physical properties
Chemical properties

3 Physical properties A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into another substance. (You can see it without changing what you’re looking at into something else.)

4 Physical Properties - Examples
Examples physical properties include: Volume Mass Weight Size Density Melting point Boiling point Density = mass per volume

5 Physical Properties - Examples
Other physical properties include: Color Hardness Odor Taste State of matter Texture Luster (shine) Flexibility – easy to bend Heat conductivity – metals are good conductors Electrical conductivity – metal are good conductors Solubility – ability to dissolve a substance Shape Viscosity – thickness of a liquid Ductility – ability to bend without breaking Malleability – ability to fold into sheets Luster = shine Flexibility = ability to move Solubility = ability to dissolve in water Viscosity = liquid thickness Ductility = ability to stretch into a wire Malleability = ability to form a thin sheet by hammering or rolling

6 Physical properties List as many physical properties as you can for this item Color – white shape – cube taste – sweet state – solid texture - rough Color – white Solubility – can dissolve in water Taste – sweet Heat conductivity – poor Shape – cube Texture - grainy

7 Chemical properties A Chemical property is a characteristic of a substance that can only be observed by changing it into a different substance.

8 Chemical properties - Examples
Examples of chemical properties include: The ability to burn -- flammability Ability to tarnish – ability to corrode Ability to rust Ability to decompose Ability to react with other chemicals Instability – reactive in the air / water Ability to do acid/base reactions Tarnish = corrosion form over metal Decompose = break apart chemically Instability = the state of being likely to change

9 Chemical properties List as many chemical properties as you can for this item. Flammability – to catch fire Ability to decompose Ability to tarnish Ability to burn – easy DECOMPOSE – YES REACT WITH CHEMICALS – WITH ACID
