A. Triad inversion doubling rules Root position chords – double the root 1st inversion chords – double the soprano (alt. bass), if diminished-dbl bass 2nd inversion chords – double the bass. Use only the 4 types of second inversion chords B. Voice-leading ideas Keep the common tone in same voice, move remaining to nearest chord tone. Resolve the leading tone to tonic when in an outer voice. C. Blasted rules!! ALWAYS Avoid: Melodic augmented intervals. Descending d5 allowed in bass on occasion Parallel octaves, 5ths, or unisons Doubling the leading tone Spacing of more than an octave in upper three voices Crossed voices Try to Avoid: Overlapping two voices Hidden 5th or octave in outer voices Unequal 5ths
