1 Bellwork/Classwork Wednesday 1/11/17
Turn in your theme statement to Mrs. Hearnsberger so that she can grade it and give feedback. Using your notes and the example from yesterday as a guide, write an introductory paragraph for your essay on “The Transformation of Arachne into a Spider.” Essay Prompt: Identify a theme in the passage and explain how the characters help to develop the theme.

2 Example Introductory Paragraph
In the myth “Daedalus and Icarus,” excerpted from Metamorphoses by Ovid, a man and his son are trapped in exile on an island. They attempt to escape by flying, but the son, Icarus, does not follow his father’s instructions and thus experiences tragic results. This story teaches readers to obey people who care about them and are wiser than them so that they will not experience similar consequences.

3 Homework Wednesday 1/11/17 The next step of your essay is to locate evidence from the passage to support your thesis statement. First, review your introductory paragraph to identify and highlight information that can be proven by the text. (See previous slide for example.) Then, find and highlight information in the original text (“The Transformation of Arachne into a Spider”) that supports your thesis. In the margin of the text, write the phrase from your introduction that you are supporting. (See partially completed example in next slide.)
