2 “Once upon a Time” (Theme)
Answer at least 4 of the Theme questions from your Story Analysis Chart (in your composition book) Compose a thematic statement. Pull 5 pieces of evidence to support your theme.

4 AP LIT “Once upon a Theme” The meaning of some literary works is often enhanced by sustained allusion to myths, the Bible, or other works of literature.  Refer to your understanding of “Once upon a Time.”  Then write a well-organized essay in which you explain the allusion that predominates the work and analyze how it enhances the work’s meaning. The most important themes in literature are sometimes developed in scenes in which a death or deaths take place. Consider “Once upon a Time,” and write a well-organized essay in which you show how a specific death scene helps to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid mere plot summary. 1A: Give 10 extra minutes next class for writing. 2B/3B: Give 10 extra minutes next class for writing. Pull in discussion and theme/evidence.

AP LIT “Once upon a Theme” Prompt 1 (allusion): Does the writer make the allusion clear? Does the writer explain how the allusion is sustained? Does the writer explain how the allusion contributes to the MOWAW? Does the writer follow standards of mechanics, spelling, and grammar? Prompt 2 (death scene): Does the writer include the specific death scene (without giving too much plot summary)? Does the writer explain how the scene illuminates or contributes to the MOWAW (theme)? Does the writer follow standards of mechanics, spelling, and grammar? 1A: Give 10 extra minutes next class for writing. 2B/3B: Give 10 extra minutes next class for writing. Pull in discussion and theme/evidence.

6 “Once upon a Theme” Submission:
AP LIT “Once upon a Theme” Submission: Based on your academic group, whose essay was the most effective? This should be a merit-based choice made through group consensus. That person should take a few minutes to revise his/her essay based on peers’ feedback. Submit in Google Classroom. I will compile all chosen essays into one document for the rest of the class to see.
