1
Mitosis and Meiosis When Cells Divide
2
When Do Cells Divide? Cell reaches maximum size. Growth Repair
Reproduction
3
Two Types of Reproduction
Asexual: One parent. EX: Bacteria, Fungi, some plants, & some animals. Offspring is genetically identical to their parent Sexual: Genetic material from two parents.
4
Meiosis Cellular reproduction in which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half, so that the daughter cells are haploid.
5
Assessment In your notebook, define the term haploid, using your own words. If 2n = 46, what is the value of n?
6
Meiosis Humans have 46 chromosomes. (23 pairs)
Diploid: Cell that contains two complete sets of chromosomes. (2n) Almost all the cells in your body are diploid.
7
Assessment Give three examples in your body where you have diploid cells.
8
Haploid Cells Cells that contain only one set of chromosomes (n).
Egg and Sperm cell are haploid Gametes
9
Homologous Chromosomes
23 pairs of chromosomes. Females = XX Males = XY
10
Meiosis I and Meiosis II
Each stage has four parts to it. 1 cell becomes 4. Meiosis I creates 2 diploid daughter cells. These go on to Meiosis II, now have 4 haploid cells.
