Calculating G.P.E. and K.E. GPE m g h KE ½ m (v)2
Gravitational Potential Energy: ( GPE = m x g x h ) Kinetic Energy ( KE = ½ x m x (v)2) Gravitational Potential Energy (J) GPE Height (m) m g h Gravitational field strength – on Earth this = 10 N/kg Mass (kg) Kinetic Energy (J) KE ½ m (v)2 Velocity (m/s) Mass (kg)

Applying the formulas:
If Maria lifts a mass of 10 kg onto a table 1.25 m high. How much G.P.E. has the mass gained? f Sophie climbs a ladder 3.4 m tall, and Sophie has a mass of 48 kg, how much G.P.E. has she gained? A car is travelling at a speed of 20 m/s and has a mass of 1200 kg. How much kinetic energy does it have? A year 11 pupil with a mass of 55 kg swinging back on their chair and falling off it at a speed of 0.6 m/s. What is his kinetic energy? A 5 kg book is placed on a 2.5 m high shelf, how much G.P.E. has the book gained? A 0.5 kg football is kicked 15 m into the air. How much G.P.E has the ball gained? Usain Bolt has a mass of 85 kg and is running at a steady speed of 10 m/s. How much kinetic energy does he have? Which has more kinetic energy a 1000kg car travelling at 5 m/s or a 0.01 kg bullet travelling at 550 m/s? A bit more challenging: A 50 kg man travels to the moon. When he climbs the 5m ladder up to his lunar base he gains 400 J of G.P.E. What is the gravitational field strength on the moon? If he did the same climb on Earth how much GPE would he gain? A bus is travelling through town, with a mass of 5040 kg and kinetic energy of J. How fast is it travelling?

GPE and KE formulas: Calculating speed example:
4
Calculating the speed! If you accidently drop a 50c coin (0.01 kg) from the top of the Shard (308 m). How fast will it be travelling when it hits the ground? Justin Beiber (mass 60 kg) fell off a 108 m cliff and landed in the sea. How fast was he going when he hit the water? Nemesis at Alton towers has a 55 m drop. The rollercoaster has a mass of 8000 kg. How fast will it be travelling when it reaches the bottom? A disobedient student dropped his Physics textbook (mass 0.1 kg) from the window (15 m above the ground). How fast was it going when it hit the ground? Al Hackett (mass 75 kg) bungee jumped from the Macau tower (233 m) in How fast was he travelling at his lowest point (13 m above the ground) A bit more challenging: 6. When I checked on the Alton towers website it told me that Nememis’ top speed is 25 m/s. (less than what I calculated). My stats and calculations are correct... so why is this the case? 7. Invent and design your own adrenalin adventure – you must include: Approximate mass of something falling Height of the drop Calculation of GPE Calculation of velocity Explanation of why the velocity will actually be less than this. Ensure you refer to conservation of energy and energy transfers in your explanation. A suitable diagram / sketch An appropriate name, tag line and selling point
