Sunday, 02 December 2018 HOW TO ANSWER ‘AMERICAN WEST’ QUESTIONS – QUESTION 2 – JANUARY 2013 LEARNING OBJECTIVES MUST– know about the different types of question in the ‘American West’ exam. SHOULD – understand how to answer ‘Recall of key events’ questions. COULD – plan and write an answer on either the new farming methods or technology in helping the Homesteaders.

Protecting crops from cattle Transporting machinery to Great Plains Not Enough Land to grow crops Crops could not survive the weather SOLUTION New machinery transported to West. Wind Pumps/’Dry Farming’ Barbed Wire The Railroad Timber & Culture Act 1873 New crops eg. Turkey Red Wheat.

HOW TO MARK ANSWERS Level One = 1 – 3 Marks = Grades G/F
Comments are unsupported statements. Example – Solutions to farming problems: new machines, new crops. Level Two = 4 – 6 Marks = Grades E/D/C Description of the lives of the homesteaders and/or changes brought about by farming/technology. Example – New farming methods: describes dry farming, Turkey Red Wheat. Technology: describes new machinery, windpumps, barbed wire, railroads. Level Three = 7 – 9 Marks = Grades B/A Shows an understanding of aspect chosen and links to how it helped the homesteaders to settle on the Plains. Example – New farming methods: explains how dry farming and use of Turkey Red Wheat helped the homesteaders. Technology: shows how new machinery directly helped homesteaders.
