3 Bill of Rights 1. 1st Amendment – Freedom of religion, speech, press
2. 2nd Amendment- Right to bear arms 3. 3rd Amendment- Quarter troops 4. 4th Amendment – Unreasonable searches and seizures 5.

4 5th Amendment 1.No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury 2.nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; 3. nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself; 4 nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; 5 nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation.

6 6th Amendment 1. The accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, 2. An impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed. 3. To be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation. 4. To be confronted with the witnesses against him; 5. To have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor; and 6.to have the assistance of counsel for his defence.

8 What is Government? 1. Government is the formal institutions and processes through which decisions are made for a group of people. (Name three examples of government.) 2. Power –refers to the government’s authority to get things done (How do we execute power in the United States?) 3. Policy – any decision made by government in pursuit of a goal (ex. What is a government policy?)

9 State Political Unit with the power to make and enforce laws over a group of people living within a clearly defined territory: Characteristics of state: 1. Population, 2. Territory 3. Government and 4. sovereignty. Why are the 50 states not technically considered a “state?”

10 Origins of the State 1. Divine Right Theory – States are founded by Gods or Gods (ex.) 2. Evolution Theory – States grew out of kinship (ex.) 3. Social Contract Theory – States form when people reach a contract to surrender some power to common authority on return for Security (ex). 4. Force Theory – Group or individual uses force to make people submit to central authority (ex).
