4. Students should choose electives that fit their interests, strengths and career aspirations. We have a variety of electives to choose from. Please check the program of studies for detailed descriptions and pre-requisites.
We are having an electives fair on February 10th for students to explore elective options during their lunch period.
Some science courses at the career center fulfill the high school diploma requirements:
EMT, Biotechnology, Animal Science, and Sports Medicine/Physical Therapy
College Summit is a course that we have available to 12th graders. The class focuses on the college admissions process and financial aid.

5. English- your grade level is determined by your English class.
History- If you are Pre-IB, you must take the Government class in 10th grade. 3 years of social studies is required for standard diploma and 4 years is required for Advanced diploma. If you have a World Geography credit from 8th grade, this will count as a history credit. We recommend you take a history every year, but you may not need to take one sophomore year.
Math- YOU NEED TO EARN AT LEAST A “C” in order to move to the next level of Math.
Math recommendation needs to be signed before science recommendation
You may want to take a math class in the summer to either catch up or get ahead, but your math class will not change in your schedule until after it is successfully completed in the summer. (NEW WORK FOR CREDIT DEADLINE IS usually in April so pay attention. Summer school information will be available early March
Science- Your choice of science class next year may have a math requirement, which is why you need your math teacher’s signature first. Astronomy – students must have taken either physics or Earth Science
Health/PE- two years are required (usually grades 9 and 10)-Reminder: if you fail health 9 or PE 9, you must repeat full year
World Language YOU MUST HAVE A FINAL AVERAGE OF “C” OR BETTER TO GO ON TO NEXT LEVEL IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE, and you will need your teacher’s signature for levels higher than I. You will need three years of a language for the advanced diploma (or two years of two different foreign languages)
AM Classes – Juniors and Seniors have the option of taking a class at 7:30. This would allow a student to leave school one or two periods early.

*Students pursuing the standard diploma must have a credential/certification test. They can fulfill this requirement in most Career center courses, any W-L career and technical class or econ and personal finance.
***ECON Course You must take a personal finance/economics course before you graduate. We recommend that you take it during your junior or senior year. You may take IB Econ instead. Students should their review academic plan to determine when it is most appropriate for them to take it. Summer school offers the course as a new work for credit option (5 hours a day), either online or as a face to face course.
*All students must have a virtual experience which they can satisfy by taking Econ and Personal Finance or IB Econ

Academic Planning Map
The academic planning map is a tool designed to assist students and families to successfully navigate the PreK-12 school experience in Arlington Public Schools (APS). This planning tool can also be used as a resource for students and families to assist with planning and goal setting to accomplish academic success. The academic planning map includes:

10. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Dual Enrollment
All students are encouraged to take at least one Advanced Placement (AP) or one International Baccalaureate (IB) level course before they graduate
Both AP and IB level courses are college level curriculum and give the student an opportunity to earn college credit
Enrollment (DE) courses
We offer AP/IB courses in core subject areas and also in many elective areas.
