May 30, 2012
2
Topics to Cover What is the Exchange Network?
The Past - Why did we build it? What can you do with it? How does it work? The Present – Finishing the foundation The Future – What lies ahead for the Network?
3
What is the Exchange Network?
A partnership to support better environmental decisions through better data access How it works Internet technology Data standards Web services and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) Key benefits Automated and efficient data exchange Greater access to information Easier data integration Better data quality
4
Why the Network? Proliferation of incompatible, inflexible IT systems led to: Burdensome, repetitive data entry Inefficient processes for sharing data with EPA More demands for money and staff Data quality and reliability issues Difficulty sharing data with other partners Duplication of efforts across program areas There had to be a better way…
5
What Can I Do With It? Submit data to EPA
Regulatory reporting requirements Make your data available for other EN partners or the public Emergency response applications Discover and access data published by other Network partners
6
How does it work?
7
The Present – Phase 1 EN working toward goal of transitioning 10 priority data flows to the Network by 2012 Data flows are being made fully “Network Ready” Partners are working to implement EN data flows Largely on track to meet most goals
8
The Future – Phase 2 Phase 2 will build on the foundation we built in Phase 1 Emphasis is on making data easier to discover, access, and use The EN governance is crafting an implementation plan for Phase 2 Stay tuned for more details in tomorrow morning’s session…
