1 New Word! What is physiology? Physiology is the study of the functions of living organisms - how they eat, breathe, and move, & what they do just to keep alive.

2 Nervous System Function Location Organs Controls everything!
Receives & transmits signals Location CNS – Head and Spine PNS – all over Organs Brain, spinal cord, nerves, and senses

3 Immune System Function Location
Fights off invading pathogens & prevents the growth and spread of cancers and diseases Location Mostly in neck, armpits and groin area Organs: Bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes and spleen

4 Reproductive System Function Location Organs
to produce gametes and help in reproduction Location Head & “nether regions” Organs external genitalia, testicles and ovaries, and other sex – specific internal organs

5 Endocrine System Function Location All over your body Organs
Regulates metabolic activities & body chemistry; makes hormones Location All over your body Organs Pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and other ductless glands

6 Integumentary System Function - Covers and protects the body. Regulates temperature Location All over body Organs Skin, nails, hair and glands

7 The Skeletal System Functions Location Organs All over your body
Movement, Support, & Protection Location All over your body Organs Bones, Joints, & Cartilage Fun fact: You are born with 350 bones, but as an adult you have only 206!

8 Muscular System Function Movement & support Location
All over [inside] body Organs Muscles (smooth, skeletal, cardiac)

9 Physiology Standard 9a Students know how the complementary activity of major body systems provides cells with oxygen and nutrients and removes toxic waste products such as carbon dioxide.

10 Cardiovascular System
Function passes nutrients, gases (especially O2 & CO2 !), hormones, etc. to and from cells in the body Location Thoracic cavity & All over the body Organs Heart, arteries, veins, capillaries & the blood

11 Respiratory System Function Location Organs
takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide Location Upper half of body Organs trachea, lungs, diaphragm, and bronchus

12 Digestive System Function Location Organs
Receives and breaks down food (*glucose*) so it can be used by cells Location From mouth to anus Organs salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, liver, intestines, anus

13 Excretory System Function
Gets rid of metabolic wastes and regulates fluid balance and acid- base balance Location All over your body Organs Sweat glands, Kidneys, urinary bladder, urethra, anus
