Reading standards in England are the best in a generation, new international test results show, after the push towards phonics led to a dramatic improvement in children’s attainment. Telegraph Dec 2017 Which is great but lets think about our children and what they need!!

How far have they come already?
Transition Nativity All so brave and they transitioned well. Due to the continuous provision continuing in year 1 and that time to feel confident and comfortable. A successful start to the National Curriculum. How fantastic was it? Didn’t it show you how far your children have come already in one term? Now it’s time for them to be challenged – in a fun and pacey way – they are ready!

Phonics Screener This takes place the second week of term after the Whit holidays. It is important! But not for the government but for your children themselves – these phonics skills of segmenting and blending and recognising all 44 sounds in words are such a good set of skills to have, just like knowing your times tables. Being confident with these skills will support them through life.

Having an extra fun afternoon outside of RWI to practise specific phonics skills not other reading skills Assessing regularly so we can keep a close track on where your child is and put support in where necessary Sending you home the right resources to support your child through – PRACTISE, PRACTISE & PRACTISE Understand the importance of supporting your child to develop a really good skill set ready for their future Support children with lots of practise of the sounds and finding them in words (not sentences not pacey enough) or writing them in words .

We were phonics spies!! We used mini magnifying glasses to find the sounds in words. We worked in pairs writing as many words as we could with the ‘ay’ and the ‘igh’ sound.

Visits Come and see what we do when we are Phonics Spies!
We will show you games, paper based activities, websites and Apps that we use in school but can be used at home too. We want you to see that it is an element of learning your children enjoy, they can achieve even at different levels and what it does for their self-esteem when they have confidence in their skills.
