Photosynthesis I pp

sunlight 6CO2 + 6H2O  6O2 + C6H12O6

OVERVIEW OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

PHOTOSYNTHESIS OCCURS IN TWO PARTS
LIGHT REACTIONS: Make energy in the form of ATP and NADPH CALVIN CYCLE: Uses the ATP and NADPH to make carbohydrates

Chloroplasts Chloroplasts contain granum which are stacks of thylakoids Stroma is the solution surrounding the granum

Light and Pigments Plant cells contain chloroplasts and the pigments are in the thylakoid membrane

Light Absorption Clusters of pigments called photosystems (I and II) in the thylakoid membrane absorb light energy

Electron Transport Chain (E.T.C.)
Energy excites electrons from water which will transport (travel) down chain to pump H+ and make NADPH

Making Energy NADPH 2 e-+ NADP+ + H+  NADPH

ATP H+ build up on one side and then move through ATP synthase to make ATP ADP + Pi  ATP
