Modern Housing designs developed in the United States from the early 1900s into the 1980s Include Prairie Style, Arts and Crafts, Bungalow, Spanish Revival, Tudor, and International Style.

Prairie Style Frank Lloyd Wright was considered the greatest figure in modern American architecture- he was the first to design this style Have strong horizontal lines, low-pitched roofs, and overhanging eaves. Constructed of wood, stone, plaster and materials found in nature Earth tone colors were used to emphasize the link between the man-built structure and natural setting Created the open floor plan

Arts and Crafts (Craftsman) Style
Celebrated use of natural materials worked by hand Simple nature inspired colors and patterns often used for interior fabrics and wall coverings Include a low-pitched roof, wide eaves with triangular brackets, exposed roof rafters, and wood, stone, or stucco siding Feature stone porch supports with thick, square or round columns and exterior chimneys made of stone Floor plans are open, with few hallways. Many windows and beamed ceilings Bungalow- one- and-a-half stories with a low-pitched, horizontal shape, and a covered porch. Shingled roof extends beyond the walls. High placed windows to allow furniture to be placed underneath.

Tudor Influenced by medieval shapes and decoration
Built with actual heavy timber that is left exposed in the stucco or they are built using more contemporary materials with a false facade of thin timber and stucco Height is emphasized inside and outside, ceilings are highly pitched Accents include patterned brick and stone designs, leaded glass bands of windows, and exposed trusses

Spanish Revival Features include enclosed patios, wrought -iron exterior decor, stucco outside, and arched windows and doors

Frank Lloyd Wright Walter Gropius- German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe- German architect Le Corbusier- French architect Geometric shapes and large expansive windows Emerging technology included inside the buildings, rooftop gardens Built and reinforced with white concrete

Postmodern View about architectural style of housing that began in 1970s Deviates from strict rules of architecture by using building techniques, angles, and styles differently Less is more All unique, diversity of design includes styles from traditional, contemporary, and newly invented forms Robert Venturi, Cesar Pelli and Frank Gehry
