6.1b- To know and why are settlements in the UK are changing? Today we will IDENTIFY different types of RURAL area and EXPLAIN how they DEVELOPED TOPIC 6 UNIT 2 Changing settlements in the UK

A place exclusively for OAPs. A place that is a community and has everything it’s residents need in a safe and secure environment Commuter village Retirement village Upland remote rural A place in a former rural area, that now is full of commuters (people who work in nearby big urban areas, like London) A traditional small community, still reliant on farming and primary industry. People tend to have lived here for many generations.

Read the information about Whitley retirement village and complete the section on Whitley village on the worksheet You should include information on:- Location of village Who lives there? Why? Facilities on offer Why have we now got retirement towns?

8 Wilmington Commuter village
Read through the Geoactive information sheet and make notes on the following: Describe its location (3) Comment on the changes between 1940 and 1999 (5) Define a commuter village (1) Describe what the traditional village of Wilmington was like (4) Explain how the village has changed (5) Why have these changes happened? (5)

9 Remote rural upland/ highland village
Read through the leaflet on Durness, make notes on the following- 1) Its location 2) Describe the village 3) How did it develop? 4) Who lives in this place and why they live there? 5) Unique features of the village 6) Why do villages like this still exist

10 GROUP TASK Divide class into 6 groups
Give out the task and info sheets to each group (2 groups do each rural settlement type) (15) Get the groups who have worked on same settlement to come together (now should be 3 groups) (10) Each group then feeds back about their settlement type, as they do so other groups fill in their note sheet Each pupil should end up with a completed rural settlement types worksheet

Why do we now have: 1. Purpose built retirement villages? 2. Commuter villages? Why are some rural areas not as remote as they used to be? Why are some places still very remote and traditional?
