Hydrocephalus What does it mean?
The term derives from the Greek word parts “hydro” which means water and “cephalus” which means head. What is it? An abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities of the brain What are the effects? Increased pressure inside the skull, progressive enlargement of the head, convulsions, and mental disabilities/mental retardation. Symptoms may include blurred or double vision, sunsetting of the eyes (eyes cast downward), problems with balance, poor coordination, slowing or loss of developmental progress, lethargy, drowsiness, irritability, other changes in personality or cognition including memory loss, problems with walking, and progressive mental impairment and dementia.
