5 Student Development and Career
Gaining independence, establishing identity, developing a sense of purpose. May feel lost or confused about majors and career May realize they don't like their major classes Unexpected interest in a new area Feel a need to make decisions NOW

6 "If we'd all stuck with our first dream job, the world would be overrun with cowboys and princesses."- Stephen Colbert in his 2011 commencement speech at Northwestern University

7 We Change!  If you think about yourself at 17/18 and how you changed.  Over these four years, you get to know yourself better, learn more about jobs and that is what my role is at UT to help students navigate this process.    The world of work has changed a lot in the past 10/20 years and is continuing to change at a rapid pace.  Many of today’s jobs didn’t exist 10 years ago; Social Media Manager, App designer…. And your students will be looking for jobs in 4 years that may not even exist today.  So their major has to prepare them for many different kinds of work, to adapt and to innovate. (cloud specialist, driverless car engineer, sustainability manager, social media manger, etc.)
