You will know the key steps in the DBQ process and will be able to practice outlining a DBQ on the spread of Islam.

5. How to Write the DBQ:
Always use complete sentences and complete paragraphs (one sentence ≠ a paragraph)

6. Do not use bullet points or outlines – the essay must be in paragraph form

7. No first person (must be written from a removed position) – NO I, Me, We, You, etc…no personal pronouns

8. Students must take a position and prove their point = No sitting on the fence

9. Thesis statements need to appear in both the introduction and conclusion paragraphs

10. Essays must be at least FIVE paragraphs

11. The Basic Outline Introduction: Thesis Paragraph
2-3 body paragraphs: divide the documents into 2-3 groups + all the components—POV, etc.
1 paragraph: contextualization and outside evidence
Conclusion: Restate your thesis—making sure you made your argument

12. The Introduction The star of the introduction is the thesis statement
Needs to include the basic historical background of the essay topic, address all parts of the question, and include an argument
No analyzing documents yet—just focus on the thesis

16. Example Thesis
In the early 21st century, scientists all over the world are divided about whether monkeys should be taught to fly. Some scientists say that monkeys should be taught to fly in order to make their lives easier, but other scientists say that teaching monkeys to fly could lead to dangerous consequences. According to the documents, the benefits of teaching monkeys to fly, such as the ability to reach higher branches and training them to deliver mail far outweigh the drawbacks including potential consequences like world domination.

17. The Body Paragraphs Organize your documents into groups (2 or 3)
In the body of the essay you need to use ALL the documents and be sure they connect back to the thesis

Ex. Because Mr. Woodman was an expert on flying animals and had an obsession with monkeys, he knew that flying monkeys would be an amazing addition to the flying animal community.

Evidence beyond the given documents that would help your essay be even stronger
Try to focus on someone’s story who was left out of the documents
It should help support the argument being made

20. Ex: A document written by another really smart teacher about her love of flying squirrels would be a helpful additional document because it would show how exciting it is to see mammals that shouldn’t fly actually take flight.

21. Contextualization
Situates the argument by explaining the broader historical events, developments, or processes immediately relevant to the question
Should be something not stated in the documents and should be longer than just a phrase—multiple sentences or even a whole paragraph
Many other animals in the world today enjoy the benefits of flight. Flying birds excel at reaching destinations quickly and have no trouble reaching the highest of branches. Bees, since they can fly, easily gather nectar from multiple flowers instead of slowly crawling from plant to plant. Bats quickly catch their prey while flying and would be quite hungry if they were forced to crawl or jump to find food.

22. Conclusion Restate the thesis
Briefly summarize your argument again and justify why you made the argument you did.
This might be another opportunity for contextualization—lasting effects/significance/contributions, etc.

23. Example
One need only examine the movie Wizard of Oz to observe flying monkeys in action. The flying monkeys exhibited several traits that made people’s lives easier. One example of their usefulness was shown by the scene when one flying monkey disposes of a pesky scarecrow by removing his legs and stuffing. Thanks to the quick work of the flying monkey, the scarecrow was reduced to a pile of hay and was not able to cause any more trouble. The flying monkeys showcased in this movie further prove the need for flying monkeys.

Stem: During the 7-8th centuries Islam spread from a small following to a vast empire that covered most of Northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Middle East.
1: The Muslims used ideas of equality and acceptance to convert people to their faith
2: Allowed the “people of the Book” to pay the Jitza and stay peacefully within the empire
3: and also used war to conquer and force conversion of conquered regions.
