Science 4 and 5 Maths Wednesday

5 Exam Outline Total Time Allowed:
1hr 30 mins (including 10 mins reading time) 2 Parts: Section A: Analytical Response to Green Monkey Dreams question. Section B: Extended Writing response inspired by a theme explored this year.

6 Section A – Analytical Response
The 3 essay questions will be based on the 3 types of story done: Dystopian Subverted Fairy-tale Fantasy Choose 1 question only to complete

7 Essay Structure Introduction 2 Main paragraphs TEAEAL
In the exam the expectation will be that you have a minimum of two main paragraphs – depending on how efficiently you use your time and how quickly you can write you may be able to write 3. Practicing by timing yourself before the exam is the only way to test yourself for English exams. Remember quality over quantity so 2 well developed main paragraphs may receive more marks than 3 rushed and underdeveloped paragraphs. Introduction 2 Main paragraphs TEAEAL

8 Structure of your essay
Introduction Paragraph 1 – USE TEAL (2 quotes) Paragraph 2 – USE TEAL (2 quotes)

9 The topic sentence outlines what you will deal with in your paragraph
Paragraph structure T = Topic E = Evidence A =Analysis L = Link The topic sentence outlines what you will deal with in your paragraph Make sure that the evidence you use is APT. It is important that you show that you understand the language by picking only the most important pieces. Use analytical language to discuss the impact of the language and how it develops the theme of hate/love, how it depicts true love or lust, how it relates to the feud…etc. Link to the question – however the questions is slightly twisted or worded – you need to make sure you are answering that question.

10 Section B – Extended Response
It is like an unseen writing prompt given in NAPLAN! You’ve done loads of these. The extended response will be based on a theme from this year’s study: E.G. Fate Gender roles Violence Individual vs. Society Nobility vs. Commoners Parent/child relationships The prompt will take an idea from our studies and ask you to write in a certain way on this topic or your personal experience, your opinion etc. You will be asked to write in a particular style of text so make sure you stick to that. E.g. letter, a speech, a personal response, review, postcard, etc.

11 Key things to consider:
Structure – always have an introduction, main paragraphs (a conclusion is not required in Section A – focus on the analysis BUT in Section B you should include one. For persuasive texts :rhetorical questions, facts and figures, inclusive language, creativity, anecdotes, a wide range of reasons, undermining the opposing belief etc. For newspaper article – style needs to be formal (broadsheet) or informal (tabloid) Letter – needs to address the person it is being sent to… Clear directions and cohesion in how you approach the topic – logical outline of an argument. Sentence structure (syntax), spelling, grammar, punctuation etc.

12 Today’s world is filled with conflict and hatred between many groups in society.
Write a speech that you would deliver to a group of young people your age, involved in a conflict between rival gangs. Persuade them that peace and reconciliation is the way to move forward? Some people believe that our destiny is laid out before us and is unchangeable. Others believe that you make your own destiny. Write the speech you would deliver to Year 9 students as they move forward with their lives into Year 10 and begin to pursue their life goals. Which side of the argument do you side with and what would you advise the Year 9s to do going forward? The gap between the rich and the poor is very big in Romeo and Juliet – the servants are concerned with their wages being cut, the nurse has dealt with tragedy of her daughter and husband dying, and the apothecary is desperate to do the right thing but his need for money overpowers his morals. The rich can afford to entertain the drama in their lives and believe it equates to meaning while the poor are concerned with the basic needs of surviving and overcoming true obstacles in life. In today’s world much of the same happens. “First world problems” are rife and the challenges faced by the poor or disadvantaged are often ignored as the rich indulge themselves in self-pity. Write an article for a magazine in which you discuss this situation in the world today.

13 Planning for time Total Time Allowed:
1hr 30 mins (90 minutes in total, inc 10 min reading) 10 mins reading time (note taking/planning only allowed) Section A: Analytical Essay (40 mins) Section B: Extended Response (40 mins)

14 Structure is SOOOOO important
You need to be diligent in planning your response and sticking to a time frame in the exam. You can use this week’s homework as practice for the exam. Think about structure Intro – signpost Main paragraphs (1 point only per paragraph – expand and develop your argument) Conclusion where necessary
