How it Works Endocrine glands are tubeless organs or groups of cells that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream Hormones are chemical substances that help regulate many body functions Carried in the body through the blood When produced during puberty, they trigger physical and emotional changes

The Endocrine System Thyroid gland - produces hormones that regulate metabolism, body heat, and bone growth Parathyroid gland - produces a hormone that regulates the body’s balance and phosphorus levels Testes - male reproductive glands that produce sperm Ovaries - female reproductive glands that produce eggs Pineal gland - secretes the hormone melatonin, which is thought to affect the onset of puberty and regulates sleep

The Endocrine System Hypothalamus - links endocrine and nervous systems and stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete hormones Pituitary gland - regulates and controls the activities of all other endocrine glands Thymus - regulates development of the immune system Adrenal glands - produce hormones that regulate the body’s salt and water balance Pancreas - a gland that serves both the endocrine and digestive systems
