1 The sources of stress and associated coping strategies when working at altitude    Matthew Bell MBChB Sue J. Paddon BSc  We wanted to know what, if any psychological preparation people made prior to an expedition or adventure into the mountains. Then we wanted to know, how they coped psychologically whilst on the trip, and would they prepare differently another time. The other thing we wanted to glean was would this research help others on expeditions, Mountain Leaders with their clients, clubs and associations with trips and individuals planning a trip into the mountains for work or fun.

Preliminary findings 44% - No Psychological preparation pre-trip “I don’t really believe psychological preparation is essential, just go with the flow and relax, it’s a holiday! This trip was an adventure and as such the unexpected can and will happen, if you accept that fact things will be fine. For me much bigger stressors will be going home. we have had a smashing trip (many ups and downs) new friends have been great in so many ways, but there is no way my friends, family and work colleagues will ever understand or comprehend what this trip has meant to me, sure they will look at a bunch of wonderful pictures, but they wont really understand. Nor will they grasp why I will want to come back again. That will be far harder than the psychological stressors on the trip itself.”
