Slide Nine Governments What is a government? An organization of authority which tries to find balance between freedom and order. What is their purpose? Provide protection for it’s citizens by creating legislation and enforcing that legislation.

15 Slide Eleven Democracy A form of government in which the supreme power is retained by the people, but which is usually exercised indirectly through a system of representation and delegated authority periodically renewed. Examples: Iraq, Panama, Taiwan, United States There are no pure democracies in the world.

16 Slide Twelve Republic A representative democracy in which the people's elected deputies (representatives), not the people themselves, vote on legislation. Example: Angola, Italy, Brazil, United States Difference between a republic and a democracy is… (Angola- New Miss. America from there) (US- Constitution-based federal republic; strong democratic tradition)

17 Monarchy Slide Thirteen
A government in which the supreme power is lodged in the hands of a monarch who reigns over a state or territory, usually for life and by hereditary right; the monarch may be either a sole absolute ruler or a sovereign - such as a king, queen, or prince - with constitutionally limited authority. Example: Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Kingdom UK- constitutional monarchy & commonwealth realm

18 Slide Fourteen Theocracy A form of government in which a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler, but the deity's laws are interpreted by ecclesiastical authorities (bishops, mullahs, etc.); a government subject to religious authority. Example: Islamic Republic of Iran, Vatican City, Central Tibetan Administration IR- a particular form of government adopted by some Muslim states (in theory but actuality a republic but its laws are required to be compatible with the laws of Islam) CTA- the Tibetan government in exile- the position of head of state belongs to the current Dalai Lama.

19 Slide Fifteen Dictatorship A form of government in which a ruler or small clique wields absolute power (not restricted by a constitution or laws). Example: Nazi Germany, Belarus, North Korea Belarus (republic in name, although in facet a dictatorship) North Korea (Communist state one-man dictatorship)

20 Slide Sixteen Totalitarian A government that seeks to subordinate the individual to the state by controlling not only all political and economic matters, but also the attitudes, values, and beliefs of its population. Example: China under Mao, Cuba under Castro, former USSR End Transition: Why does a nation practice their type of government? The US as a Republic, why? What would cause a nation to change its government? Example- US use to be under a monarchy when the 13 colonies was created. Why did we break away from that and create a democracy? Mao (China)- Culture revolution (no western influence) [look up] (red star); Castro (Cuba)- for awhile; Soviet Union (Cold War)
