Introduction

2 Objectives of the course
To enhance the theoretical and practical knowledge related to the collection, transmission, validation, aggregation and dissemination of official waste statistics. The main focus will be on: comparability between waste statistics from countries using different methods ways of avoiding inconsistencies in the European waste statistics ways to obtain more effective statistics production.

3 Contents of the course Methods of producing waste statistics:
How does the use of different methods affect the comparability of the results between countries? Where are the potential data gaps and inconsistencies and how to cope with them? Definition issues affecting comparability Revision of the Waste Statistics Regulation: Effects on the data collection and on the comparability of results Methods for the validation of waste statistics: Analysis of time series for one country Comparisons between countries Use of economic indicators in the validation Cross-validation of waste statistics with data reported according to other reporting obligations

09:45-10:30 Presentation “An overview of the hitherto existing results of the analysis of the data reported according to the Waste Statistics Regulation” (Jürgen Gonser, ARGUS) 10:30-11:15 Presentation “The Revision of the Waste Statistics Regulation and its effects on the data collection and on the comparability of results” (Brigitte Karigl, Environment Agency Austria) 11:15-11:30 Break (coffee and tea) 11:30 – 12:15 Group Session: Discussion and exchange of information on Member State experiences concerning effects of WStatR-Revision on producing waste statistics 12:15 – 13:00 Follow-up from the group sessions and plenary discussion on implementation of specific issues 13:00 – 14:00 Lunch 14:00 – 14:45 Presentation “Use of different reporting standards and tools provided by Eurostat in the data collection of 2012 » (Hartmut Schroer, Eurostat) 14:45 – 15:00 Break (coffee, tea) 15: :00 Practical demonstration of the use of reporting tools (Hartmut Schroer, Eurostat)  16:00 – 16:15 Close of the day
