Watch the following video clip. Think about the following question. What is sportsmanship?

3 Ethics in sport Being ethical in sport is to play by the rules and to show high moral standards in your behaviour. Sport is supposed to be a fair activity, with everyone having an equal opportunity. The three aspects that affect ethics in sport are: Gamesmanship Sportsmanship Deviance

4 Sportsmanship chance-win-helps-brother-jonny-video Sportsmanship involves fairness and generosity. Those who show good sportsmanship stick to the rules of lose gracefully. The video about shows two brothers. One coming in 1st place who can no longer carry on, His brother who is in 2nd stops to help him. This leaves another competitor to go ahead and win the race.

6 Sportsmanship Here are some examples of sportsmanship within sport.
Shake hands with your opponent Show concern for others Never swear or be abusive Take defeat well and show good humour Thank anyone who has been in participation with you or against you.

When competitors are seen to ‘bend the rules’ they are seen to be using gamesmanship. Athletes use gamesmanship to seek an unfair advantage against their opponent. This video shows Nadal playing Federer. Nadal asked for a video replay after Federer made his shot. This was to slow down play rather than him actually believing it was out.

A dive in football An athlete who pushes another over in a long distance race Time wasting Faking an injury Attempting to get a head start in a race Tampering with equipment- eg cricket ball

Deviance involves human behaviour that is against your society's norms and values. Eg behaviour that is against the law.
