Theme 1- Humanism 1. The revival of Greek and Roman learning inspired Humanists to emphasize the worth and creativity of individual human beings.

Theme 2- Education 1. Popularization of the study of history, philosophy, Latin, and Greek.

Led to advancements in Science (Copernicus, Galileo) Led to world exploration (1492 Columbus sailed to the new world) Art and literature is forever changed Printing press led to spread of literacy and education Led to questioning of Church teachings Lays the foundation for modern history

1450- Gutenberg invents the Printing Press Leonardo di Vinci paints the Mona Lisa St. Peter’s Basilica built Michelangelo paints the Sistine Chapel 1543- Copernicus publishes ‘On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres” claiming the sun, not the earth, is the center of the universe Elizabethan Era in England 1596- Shakespeare writes the play “Romeo and Juliet” Galileo invents the telescope (1633 forced to recant the Copernican theory) English Civil War (Glorious Revolution)
