1 The Lexile /Quantile Framework
Differentiation with The Lexile /Quantile Framework Linking readers with text and linking assessment with Mathematics instruction…IT’S EASIER THAN IT SOUNDS! Jennifer Griffin and Michelle Sweeting

2 WHY LEXILES/QUANTILES?
*Differentiation *Planning and scaffolding instruction *Optimizing growth potential

3 WHAT THE HECK IS A LEXILE?
*NOT a reading program, pre-packaged assessment, or subscription! *It is an interpretive tool (in the form of a scale) that uses a scientific approach to measuring text complexity AND student ability, growth and potential for future success!

4 THE SIMPLE IDEA BEHIND THE SCIENCE
If we know how well a student can read and how hard a specific text is to comprehend, we can predict how well that student is likely to understand that text.

5 TWO MEAURES, SAME SCALE! *Student Measure determines student reading ability! *Text Measure determines difficulty level of a text!

6 Optimum growth potential
If we can match a reader’s lexile level with a text with the same lexile level, we should expect about a 75% comprehension rate! TARGET READING EXPERIENCE! Not too hard + not too easy= Optimum growth potential

7 More information! NOT more testing!
All major standardized reading tests include Lexile measures in their reports. More than 28 million Lexile measures are reported from national and state assessments, classroom assessments, and reading programs! More information! NOT more testing! STUDENT/READER MEASURES

8 Text Measures! …and counting!

13 More importantly…Are they ready for life?
An examination of the reading demands of the post-secondary world vs. the demands placed on high school seniors (according to Lexile measures) indicates a significant gap!

15 You have access to your students’ Lexile levels! *EVAAS
*EOG/EOC SCORE REPORTS Jennifer will show you where to find them!

18 Predicting success and providing support
Matching readers with Texts! Predicting success and providing support

19 Know your students! Adjust accordingly!
Target range should be from 100L below to 50L above their reported Lexile measure.

20 HELPING STUDENTS MAKE GOOD CHOICES WHEN SELECTING BOOKS!
Lexile FAB (Find a Book!) Destiny Library Search Lexiles are not just for ELA teachers! Watch how Jennifer makes it work in Biology!

21 Vocabulary in Biology Monday: Use a circle “Thinking” map to brainstorm everything students know about the new vocabulary word(s)

22 Vocabulary in Biology Tuesday: Read article about new vocabulary word(s) on Newsela with students’ lexile levels

23 Vocabulary in Biology Wednesday: Watch a short clip on new vocabulary word (s) and complete a “T” Chart on Examples and NonExamples of the word (s)

24 Vocabulary in Biology Thursday: Students will draw a visual representation of the vocabulary word (s)

25 Vocabulary in Biology Friday: Students will be asked to complete a summary of what they learned throughout the week using the Frayer Model.
