Human Organ Systems
2
Levels of Organization
3
Cardiovascular System
Primary Organs: heart, arteries, veins, capillaries Primary Functions: blood transports gases, water, nutrients, wastes, hormones, wbc, etc, to and from cells where exchanges are made Circulatory System
4
Digestive System Primary Organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, sm &
lg intestine, rectum, liver, pancreas, gall bladder Primary Functions: digest food into small products so can be absorbed by blood, remove waste materials, reclaim water Digestive system
5
Endocrine System Primary Organs: glands Primary Functions:
regulates body activities like growth, metabolism, nutrient use by secretion of hormones Endocrine system
6
Excretory System Primary Organs: kidneys, bladder, ureters, urethra
Primary Functions: to remove nitrogenous waste from blood, maintain salt and water balance, regulate pH of blood Excretory System
7
Integumentary system Primary Organ: skin Primary Functions:
waterproofs, cushions and protects deeper tissues, regulates temp, secretes wastes, sensory receptors for temp, pressure, pain Integumentary System
8
Lymphatic System Primary Organs: nodes, spleen, tonsils, lymphatic
vessels Primary Functions: returns fluids to blood vessels, cleanse blood, contains cells involved in immunity Lymphatic system
9
Muscular System Primary Organs: skeletal muscle Primary Functions:
“machines” of body their contraction allows movement, manipulation of env, generate heat, Muscular System
10
Nervous System Primary Organs: brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory
receptors Primary Functions: fast- acting control system, receives, interprets, sends appropriate response to both internal and external stimuli Nervous system
11
Reproductive System Primary Organs: male: testes, penis
female: ovaries, uterus Primary Functions: to produce gametes, allow for fertilization, provide a place for embryo to develop, nourish infant after birth
12
Respiratory System Primary Organs: nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea,
bronchus, lungs, diaphragm Primary Functions: to supply blood with oxygen and to remove excess carbon dioxide Respiratory system
13
Skeletal System Primary Organs: bones, cartilage, ligaments, joints
Primary Functions: Supports body, framework for skeletal muscles, protects organs, formation of blood cells, stores minerals Skeletal System
