2 BRAINSTORM Brainstorm on a chart what the class think are the characteristics/attributes and value of a role model. Discuss, explain and compare. Keep this brainstormed chart for use in future lessons.

3 Working in Groups In small groups think of some role models that you know, remember to identify role models from all walks of life, as well as the sporting category. Choose a recorder to write up your group list of role models. Brainstorm people considered to be role models, then identify and list examples of Aboriginal people considered to be role models. Your teacher will collect the lists of Aboriginal role models to collate and write on the board or a chart for the next lesson.

4 Some Aboriginal Role Models

Write their names on a chart or the board for later reference. Discuss and identify other Aboriginal role models you may know and/or like to find out about. You might even know an Aboriginal role model from your own town. Add their names to the class list.

6 Select a Role Model to Research
Select a role model you would like to research. Your teacher will discuss with you how to use resources and take notes. Your teacher will discuss the report format with you to assist in knowing how to organise your notes about your findings. Your teacher may wish to give you a copy of Activity sheet 1: research notes, to record your information under appropriate headings.

7 Writing a Report Your teacher will show you an example of the report format he/she wishes you to use, using a role model as an example.

8 Making a Diorama In pairs or individually, Plan and make a diorama depicting a major life event or achievement of your role model. A diorama is a way to represent an aspect of your role model’s life in a 3 dimensional way.

9 Presenting Reports and Dioramas
In pairs or individually, present your reports and dioramas to the whole class. Consider the range of different areas that Aboriginal people have excelled in as role models. Your teacher might like you to display your reports and dioramas to share with other classes and/or parents.
