FIGURE 1 Schematic of stable-isotope infusion studies performed for the measurement of BCAA and FFA kinetics. In study protocol 1, BCAA kinetics in 14 IS and 12 IR subjects were measured with the use of [U-<sup>13</sup>C<sub>6</sub>]leucine and body composition measured with <sup>2</sup>H<sub>2</sub>O. [U-<sup>13</sup>C<sub>16</sub>]Palmitate was used in protocol 2 to quantify FFA kinetics in 13 IS and 12 IR subjects. Breath and blood samples were taken at intervals for the measurement of isotopic infusion at baseline and after infusion. Indirect calorimetry was performed for measurement of carbon dioxide excretion.
