1 Addition Strategies 2nd Grade Parent Help

2 Part Part Whole is also referred to as a bar model.
Start with the number sentence… = __ The bar model shows that has the same value as 77. Part Part Whole Whole ? 32 45 Part Part Whole is also referred to as a bar model. It is a visual representation that shows the addends have the same value as the sum. Part Part

3 Look at the number sentence…
= __ We always start with the ones place to create good habits for future addition. You add those digits… 5 + 2 = 7 The 7 will be in the ones place for our sum. Decomposing Decomposing is when we use mental math to break apart a number into place value to use basic facts to solve an equation.

4 Decomposing Next look at the tens place… = _7 You add the value of those numbers = 70 The digit 7 will be in the tens place for our sum. So we know that = 77 Decomposing is when you use mental math to break apart a number into place value to use basic facts to solve an equation.

5 Using place value blocks helps to see the problem on paper.
Start with the number sentence… = __ Place Value Blocks Using place value blocks helps to see the problem on paper.

6 Open Number LIne 35 + 24 = ___ (Moving forward)
Look at the number sentence… = ___ (Moving forward) First we break we decided if we are moving forward or backwards on the number line. Next, we place the largest addend on the number line. Then, we write the other addend into expanded form. = ___ 24 = Open Number LIne 35 An open number line is a blank number line. We can use it to jump forward or backwards to show a number sentence

7 Then, take the expanded form and jump the hundreds, then tens, then ones.
= ___ 24 = Open Number LIne 35 45 55 An open number line is a blank number line. We can use it to jump forward or backwards to show a number sentence

8 Look at the number sentence and set up vertical
3 5 +2 4 First, at the ones 5 + 4 = 9 Then, add the tens 3 tens + 2 tens = 5 tens The answer will be 5 tens 9 ones = 59 Basic Algorithm We use the basic algorithm to line up numbers quickly and add or subtract
