Parallel and Series Circuits
2
WARM UP Compare and contrast electric force and electric field.
What are the 3 ways you can create a charge? What does the law of electric charges say about 2 objects that are positively charged Answer questions 9-12 on page 481
3
Moving Charges! Do you remember how to create a charge?
How can we keep a charge going? Ideas???
4
CIRCUITS A circuit is a closed path through which electric charges (electrons) flow Without a path (circuit), electrons will not keep flowing
5
Switches Sometimes a circuit will contain a switch. A switch is used to open and close a circuit. A closed (on) switch allows charges to flow by completing the circuit An open (off) switch stops the flow by breaking the circuit.
6
Parts of a circuit All circuits have 3 parts:
an energy source (battery) wires load (changes electric energy into other form) The load can be a bulb, buzzer, motor or any other device.
7
Let’s practice!
8
Series Circuit All elements connected consecutively
Removing one light breaks circuit Same current in both lights
9
SERIES CIRCUITS HAS ONLY ONE PATHWAY FOR MOVING CHARGES
IF THERE IS ANY BREAK IN THE CIRCUIT, ALL CHARGES STOP FLOWING AND NO LIGHTS WORK WHERE MIGHT YOU SEE A SERIES CIRCUIT?
10
How to Wire a Series Circuit!
11
Parallel Circuit Elements connected separately
Remove one light, the others still work normally Voltage the same across each element
