Agenda Warm Up Reading “Attacking the Obesity Epidemic” Cause & Effect
Together [[1-5]] What’s Changed? [[Individual]] ‘Systems Approach’ Needed [[Together]] (HW?) If finished, complete Anticipation Guide Cause & Effect
2
Warm-Up Now that we have read “Bad Food, Tax it” do you think a tax on healthy food is a good idea? Why or why not? What are some changes in eating habits that you feel you need to make? What is the effect that you want to see based on these changes? When you are finished, continue to work on your grammar packet.
3
“Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First Figuring Out Its Cause” by Jane E. Brody
Open your books to page 80. Annotate as you read
4
What’s Changed? What is the author trying to do in paragraphs 6-9? What does the author try an appeal to? When women entered the work force, what happened to the foods consumed by people? What do the Lancet authors report is needed to bring “the weights of Americans back to 1978 levels”? Is it reasonable? Why or why not?
5
‘Systems Approach’ Needed
In general, what does Dr. Gortmaker want? Where have we seen this before? How much could California make a year with a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks? What would be the benefit of this? What would be the benefit of teaching healthier eating in “school-based programs”? How would this be done?

Anticipation Guide Go back and look at your anticipation guide and the predictions you made. Label the statements true or false based on what you learned by reading the article. Record the number of the paragraph in which you found the information. Make any needed corrections in the last column.
7
Cause and Effect As we read the article, we learned about various causes of obesity. Example: The cause is an increase in television watching has led to people eating more snacks late at night. The effect is that people are less active in the evenings, consuming more calories, and gaining weight.
8
Cause and Effect As we learned about the causes of obesity, the author has outlined a few ways to combat the causes. In the next activity, you will outline the anticipated effects of the changes (causes) the author lists. Here is a tobacco example (so I don’t “steal” your examples from the article): Cause: Tobacco taxes were increased Effect: It was more expensive to smoke and less people wanted to spend money on tobacco products, so smoking rates started to decline. I’m using a tobacco example so I don’t “take” the students’ examples from the article.
9
Cause and Effect With your group, go through the article and look for more cause-and-effect relationships. Find three cause-and-effect relationships that promote fighting obesity. What are the causes that the author lists and what are the anticipated effects?
