Summary (1/2) 17-year-old son, Mike committed suicide after hearing his girl friend was going to get engaged to someone else. Since Mike cordially devoted himself to many friends and neighbors when he was alive, it was too deplorable to hear for him committing suicide without anyone who reached out to help him. His friends told the stories about their friendship with him and discussed the tragedy of teen suicide. The Yellow Ribbon Project was born to prevent the tragedy of teen suicide such as Mike’s death by a foundation dedicated to eliminating suicide.

Summary (2/2) Yellow cards are used for children who ask for help as part of Yellow Ribbon Project. By taking a yellow ribbon card to a counselor, teacher, clergy, parents or friend, they recognized that children were suicidal and got them help. The Yellow Ribbon Project has saved the lives of teens around the world by letting children know there is always someone who cares you like Mike told us.“I will always be with you.” 4

MY THOUGHTS (1/2) However, considering better later than never, we had better put more effort to develop the ways to reach children facing depression rather than looking back on the past. Now that the program has been reaching out to help many children who face the depression around the world, they have more chances to overcome it. The foundation for the program should put its best effort to reach children who are in trouble. 7

MY THOUGHTS (2/2) Mike devoted himself to many people facing various difficulties. It was deeply moving to his friends and other person. After all, the establishment of Yellow Ribbon Project was motivated by his death to eliminate teen suicide. Due to the absence of institutional arrangement for children to communicate with a counselor, teacher, clergy, parents or friend, they did not have chances to make right decisions when they faced depression. This situation may even lead some children to the death. Yellow Ribbon Project should have launched earlier than it did so that more children could be saved from the death. 8

DISCUSSION 1. Why do children sometimes tend to make extreme decisions? ☞ Most of children are very sensitive and do not have enough life experience. When they are facing in depression, they easily make an extreme decision. That is the reason why they need always adult’s advice and care. 2. Why could not Mike’s parents prevent Mike’s suicide? ☞ Because Mike devoted himself to many people, I think that his parents never expect his suicide. 3. What’s the key role of Yellow Ribbon Card? ☞ Yellow ribbon card will be used for children to ask any help when they have some difficulties. Then many people will help children having yellow ribbon card.
