Overview of the Faculty Constitution and Proposed Revisions

Faculty Constitution Founded by the University Faculty and Board of Regents in 1949 Establishes the fundamental principles and established precedents for faculty governance at UNM Amendments require: presentation twice to Faculty for debate in meetings at least 4 weeks apart; two- thirds vote of voting Faculty members; ratification by the Regents

Why Amend the Constitution Now?
Has not been amended since 1985 (29 years) The majority of the proposed revisions are updates and “clean up” work that reflect current administrator titles and policies Substantive changes are needed to reflect changes in administrative practice, increasing faculty numbers causing an ever increasing number of faculty senators, and changes in Regent’s Policies

Non Substantive Revisions
Clean up excessive language to be concise Title changes/updates Update outdated information to current state Remove University Libraries callouts as it is now a college Move sections to more appropriate areas General format/grammatical clean up

Substantive Revisions
Inclusion of the Faculty Handbook in Article I, Section 2 Members of the Committee on Governance shall be tenured (Article 1, Sect. 5c) Addition of Provost and Chancellor in Article I, Section 6b(viii) Presiding Officer of the Faculty Senate shall be tenured (Article I, Section 6d) Change in calculation of number of Faculty Senators in Article I, Section 6 A. Change Vice-President to Provost/Chancellor B. Provide for new title of Chancellor of Health Sciences and his/her appointment according to Regent’s Policy.

Substantive Revisions continued
Inclusion of Provost in Dean/Director (re)appointments in Article III, Section 3 Provide for appt./re-appt. of Deans/Directors of Colleges and Schools (other than HSC) by Provost after consultation with President, faculty, chairs etc. Provide for appt./re-appt. of HSC Deans by Chancellor according to Regents policies and consultation with President, faculty, chairs etc. Removal of “Other Administrative Officers”, Article III, Section 4
