2 Tennis Court Oath In the Actual meeting of the Estates General, the Third Estates refused to conduct any business until the king broke tradition and ordered the three Estates to sit together as a single representative body. The Third Estate adopted the title National Assembly and declared itself the true representative body of France. The National Assembly took the Tennis Court Oath, pledging to write a constitution for France. A constitutional monarchy was established.

3 July 14, 1789 Bastille Day ¼ of the people in Paris are unemployed
Bread prices sore-people are unable buy food A rumor spread the king’s troops were coming to Paris. Angry crowds marched to seize arms and gunpowder and stormed the Bastille on July 14th, 1789. Peasants across the country would begin to revolt.

4 March on Versailles The Great Fear
Senseless panic in France after Bastille Day Unemployment and hunger increased. October 5th, 7,000 women rioted over the price of bread, then invaded the palace and killed several of the kings guards The king promised them food and left with the peasants. Never to return to Versailles.

5 The Legislative Assembly
September 1791 a new constitution was written and handed the power to the new LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Power to create laws and approve war The king still held the power to enforce laws The Legislative Assembly was split into 3 groups based on where they sat in the room

6 Declaration of the rights of Man
Made by France’s government during the time of the French Revolution King was over taxing the people National Assembly comes up with the Rights of Man Guarantees ‘life, liberty and property’ to the people

7 The Execution of Louis XVI
On June 21, 1791, the royal family attempted to flee France. They were caught and returned to Paris. The king agreed to sign the Constitution of 1791 and then vetoed key revolutionary ideas. In November 1792 incriminating royal documents were found that showed that the king was negotiation secretly to restore his authority and thwart the Constitution. As a result the Louis XVI was tried for treason and sentenced to death.

8 Reign of Terror Now at war against every major European power, the National Convention, led by Maximilien Robespierre, called for drastic measures to save France from “enemies of the nation”. He creates the Committee of Public Safety Robespierre and his fellow republicans believed that French citizens would have to be taught new virtues of the Republic and created a new calendar with new months, weeks, and days. Between July 1793 and July ,000 people (enemies of the republic) were beheaded

9 The End Of Robespierre July 1794: Members of the National Convention turn on Robespierre and sent him to the Guillotine! 1795: National Convention drafts a new plan for the government Power is given to the Upper Middle Class Two house legislature and Executive body (5 men) These men were moderates NOT Revolutionaries Often they were corrupt, using the country’s $$$$
