Myfyriwr o Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Enillodd Fedal Ragoriaeth am safon ardderchog ei waith ym Mrasil yn 2015. Yn 2016 daeth yn ôl i'r coleg i hyfforddi tri saer ifanc a'u helpu i wireddu eu breuddwydion o gynrychioli'r DU yn rowndiau terfynol World Skills. Erbyn hyn mae'n hunangyflogedig ac yn cyflogi'i brentisiaid ei hun. Grŵp Llandrillo Menai student Achieved Medallion for Excellence for outstanding standard of work, Brazil 2015 Returned in 2016 to train three young carpentry hopefuls in their quest of representing the UK at World Skills final Now self-employed and employing his own apprentices Carpenter and former Grŵp Llandrillo Menai student Owain Jones (21) from Blaenau Ffestiniog Returned from Sao Paulo, Brazil with a Medallion for Excellence for the outstanding standard of his work. WorldSkills Championships are the Olympics for vocational trades. 1,188 competitors from 62 countries took part in the event and a huge spectrum of skills were covered Owain, who learnt his trade at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, fought hard to gain his place on the UK Team. It was only in June when the final selections for the world finals took place, that Owain knew his hard work had paid off, and he’d be the one representing the UK in Brazil. A self-employed carpenter, Owain took part in the carpentry competition and came seventh out of nineteen other competitors. The competition was closely fought with the joint gold medallists from Korea and Germany gaining 541 and 539 point respectively, Owain’s creditable score of 518 earnt him a Medallion of Excellence – meaning Owain can now claim to be amongst the best carpenters in the world! Owain Jones was back at the college in 2016 to help train three students who are aiming to represent the UK in Carpentry at World Skills 2018 in Abu Dhabi. The former competitor turned trainer, and assisted three young carpentry hopefuls (two from Northern Ireland and one from Norwich) to achieve their dream of representing the UK at a World Skills Final. Prior to his selection of the UK squad, Owain became self-employed so that he was able train as much as needed in order to reach the high standard required for the World Skills. Owain has now been in business for since 2013 and is looking to take on two apprentices in 2017 with a view to expanding his business, OJ Carpentry.
