Persuasive Essay A short nonfiction work that tries to persuade a reader to think or act in a particular way.

Persuasive Essay Include:
Appeals to reason – logical arguments based on verifiable evidence, such as facts, statistics, or expert testimony Appeals to emotion – statements intended to affect listener’s feelings about a subject. These statements often include charged language – words with strong positive or negative associations.

Author’s Motive An author’s intent
An author’s reason/purpose for writing Think: “Why does the writer include this information?”

Persuasive Argument Claims – statements the author wants to assert are true

Persuasive Argument You must analyze and evaluate an author’s claims to determine whether or not they adequately support their position

Evaluating an Author’s Argument
Credible? – is the argument support by valid and relevant evidence? Or is it based on incorrect reasoning? Comprehensive? – is the evidence provided complete? Generalized? – are the statements too broad without evidence/support?
