Broadening Participation of People with Disabilities in STEM
Challenges Lagging participation – 19% of the U.S. population, but less than 10% of employed scientists and engineers Persistence in STEM education – Issues of inaccessible pedagogy and negative attitudes Transition points – Need for supports between secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education Promising Practice: Virtual Mentoring Connecting students and faculty separated geographically Control over identity and representation Immersive environments for students who have difficulty with face-to-face interactions (students with ADHD or autism)
