Introduction to Biology
2
7 Characteristics of Living things
Growth and development Undergo change in size and shape in maturation) 2. Acquire energy Obtain and use energy (food, sunlight) to power cellular activities (movement, repair, growth) This includes acquisition of nutrients and gas exchange 3. Reproduce Give rise to offspring (sexually or asexually)
3
7 Characteristics of Living things
4. Respond to stimuli Respond and adapt to environment (escape predators, move towards light, move away from harm (chemical or temp) 5. Homeostasis Maintain a near constant internal environment despite changes in the external environment (excrete, body temperature, pH levels, blood sugar, heart rate…)
4
7 Characteristics of Living things
6. Order and organization Must be composed of cells Multicellular organisms have various levels of organization 7. Adaptation Ability to change structure and appearance over time to better adapt to changes in the environment. This can not be seen over ones lifetime. (birds beaks, butterfly mimicry)
5
Cell Theory All living things are made up of 1 or more cells.
The cell is the simplest unit that can carry out all life functions. All cells come from other cells.
6
Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes – link
7
What kind of living thins are made of these cells?
Bacteria are made up of prokaryotic cells. Everything else is made up of eukaryotic cells. Animals, plants, fungi, ect.
8
Similarities and Differences
Prokaryotes do not have membrane bound organelles. Prokaryotes do not contain a nuclear envelope. Prokaryotes are a lot smaller Prokaryotes are less complex. They both contain DNA Both have a cell membrane Both have organelles
