1 THE HUMAN HEART

2 Do now: How do you think the heart maintains a one-way flow of blood through your body? Do you think heart valves will be similar or different from the valves in the pressure bulb? WHY?

3 RIGHT ATRIA RIGHT VENTRICLE LEFT ATRIA LEFT VENTRICLE VALVES SEPARATE THE ATRIA FROM THE VENTRICLES. Valves prevent backflow of blood.

4 When you listen to your heart you can hear a lub-dub sound…
When you listen to your heart you can hear a lub-dub sound… The 1st sound LUB, is the valves b/w atria and ventricles closing. The 2nd sound DUB, are the valves closing when blood leaves the ventricles.

5 Deoxygenated blood: CO2 (blue) heads to your RIGHT ATRIA.
Our transport system: Blood circulates the body dropping off oxygen to organs and picking up CO2 that organs need to get rid of. Deoxygenated blood: CO2 (blue) heads to your RIGHT ATRIA. Then to your RIGHT VENTRICLE (still blue) Then to your LUNGS (this is where the CO2 will be exchanged for O2 in your alveoli)

6 From LUNGS. Blood heads back to your heart entering the LEFT ATRIA.
6. Then enters your LEFT VENTRICLE. 7. Blood full of O2, then leaves your Left ventricle and heads back to the entire body to drop off more O2.

7 RIGHT ATRIA: RECEIVES (DIRTY CO2) BLOOD COMING FROM BODY.
RIGHT VENTRICLE: SENDS (DIRTY CO2) BLOOD TO LUNGS LEFT ATRIA: RECEIVES (CLEAN O2) BLOOD FROM LUNGS BACK TO HEART. LEFT VENTRICLE: SENDS (CLEAN O2) BLOOD FROM HEART TO REST OF BODY.

8 3 TYPES OF BLOOD VESSELS (Tubes that carry blood)
Arteries: carry O2 to the rest of the body all over in many directions. Veins: Carry CO2 to the heart. Capillaries: are thin blood vessels that connect arteries to veins.
