George is a history teacher at a local high school talking with his coworkers in the breakroom. He says: “I’m just not reaching my students, they seem completely uninterested in my subject matter.” “I wish there was a way to engage them into what is one of the most exciting areas of study.” Some of the others present in the room share his pain from their own perspectives, and offer suggestions such as: field trips, role playing, and scouring the internet.
2
Joe enters the break room partway through the conversation, and during a pause offers suggestion: “Oh! My girlfriend works for this company called Oculus Virtual Reality which is a company that specializes in virtual reality, and has developed a head mounted display called Oculus Rift.” “Why don’t you meet me at my girlfriends, Diane, after school and she can tell you all about it.”
3
George arrives at Oculus VR and Diane begins explaining how Oculus Rift could be used in a school environment. Diane says: “Based on the current usage in gaming, we predict that this product will soon be used by educators to give their students first-hand knowledge on various topics” - “This could be seen as taking the students on a field trip back in time to experience the Western Expansion” - Diane takes him to show room so he can actually try it out.
4
Diane and Joe are looking at a computer display of what George is experiencing through the headset.
5
Diane says to George: “As you can see, the headset allows you to have complete immersion into a virtual reality. Go ahead and turn your head side to side to look around and see how seamlessly the visuals flow. Through immersion and interaction you are currently experiencing telepresence. You have just left our reality and are not aware that your body is still in our office, while your mind is perceiving the VR as real.”

George takes off the headset and says: “Wow, if I were able to use this technology in the classroom, my students could relive history, even better they could live history.” Diane replys “Ultimately, Virtual Realities can be generated on any topic that can be studied in a specific department.” These are a few of examples of disciplines that have entertained the thought of using VR as a teaching tool.
7
George sings the praises of Oculus Rift to his colleagues by saying that this someday soon will be used as an innovative tool in all of our classrooms!
