7 Meanings Are in People Denotation is the common meaning associated with a word—standard dictionary meaning. Connotation—subjective meaning of a word, what a word suggests is based on the context in which the word is used. For example—I say “That’s gross” in response to an ugly bug. The denotative meaning of gross is an aggregate of 12 dozen things. Connotatively, I meant that the bug was horrible, ugly, and disgusting. The meaning of gross came from my interpretation, not the word. Copyright © 2014, 2011, 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
