Starter Recap autobiography
You have 30 seconds to talk non stop and tell your neighbour what autobiography writing is. Swap over – you have another 30 seconds to add as much as you can to their definition of autobiography – can you do it without repeating anything they said? Feedback – so what is autobiography writing?

Firstly, listen closely to this extract from Lord of the Rings. Which techniques do you hear? Be prepared to come up with at least one reason why they are effective. Now read the extract through and highlight the techniques on the sheet. Annotate which techniques they are when you find them. EXTENSION – also consider and annotate why they are effective.

Extension Objective Know how to merge descriptive and autobiography writing in preparation for your controlled assessment. Sometimes writing might be descriptive AND autobiographic. Remind yourself of autobiographic features (think about our starter today and look at your notes from last lesson). While we read highlight/underline all the autobiographic features from this text. Now read it again on your own and highlight/underline all the descriptive techniques. EXTENSION THINKING – how is this similar or different to the way Lord of the Rings used descriptive techniques? Why?

You should - write a descriptive piece about a journey. This could be a continuation or re writing of your written work from last lesson. You could – merge autobiography and description to write your piece on a journey. You might – work particularly on your use of techniques we have not looked at this lesson, or focus particularly on using an interesting range of punctuation. It might help if you look back at the Lord of the Rings extract for this.

Descriptive writing Peer assessment
Read your neighbour’s work and give them a star in the margin every time they have used a descriptive technique or autobiographic feature. Comment on one thing they have done well and one thing they could improve on. How many stars did you get?
