Carl Rogers’ “Self Theory”
“Clients”, not “patients”. We have a conflict between what we value in ourselves and what we believe others value in us. We are constantly trying to become more complete.
3
Self Theory The “self”: your own view of who you are and what you value in yourself, life, and others. We want positive regard: how you see yourself in a positive light due to positive feedback from others. Sometimes people place conditions of worth on you: must meet certain conditions to get positive regard.
4
Self Theory The cure for this is to receive unconditional positive regard- the feeling that your significant others, family, and friends accept you for who you are. This can help you become fully functioning- the ability to be your true self.
