Volcanoes cause damage in several ways:
Lava flows out of a volcano and runs downhill into valleys
Gas-charged flows of hot ash that can descend from a volcano at 60 mph or more.
They can discharge poisonous gases that can suffocate people and animals in nearby lowland areas.
Eruptions can also release choking dust
Trigger landslides and mudflows

There are zones where volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountain building are especially active.
They are usually found associated with crustal boundaries.
