Earthquakes & Volcanoes
Aim: What threats do volcanoes present?
2
I. What is a volcano landform on Earth’s surface where molten magma has erupted. The source of magma is deep within Earth. Volcanoes, like earthquakes, tend to occur near plate boundaries. Intro to Volcanoes
3
II. Volcanoes as hazards
Volcanoes cause damage in several ways: Lava flows out of a volcano and runs downhill into valleys Gas-charged flows of hot ash that can descend from a volcano at 60 mph or more. They can discharge poisonous gases that can suffocate people and animals in nearby lowland areas. Eruptions can also release choking dust Trigger landslides and mudflows
4
Earthquakes & volcanoes
They are not distributed randomly over Earth. There are zones where volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountain building are especially active. They are usually found associated with crustal boundaries.
5
Ring of fire
6
Ring of fire Located surrounding the Pacific Ocean
Includes countries such as Japan, and states on the western coast of the United States such as California and Alaska. Lets take a look at the Ring of Fire Hawaiian Island Formation
